« The first edition of this little Work was published some years ago on a much smaller scale, and intended solely for the use of the Non-commissioned Officers and private Soldiers of the Cavalry. The favourable opinion with which it was received, encourages me to reprint it now in a more extended form; and I have been advised in doing so, to endeavour to make this second attempt in some degree acceptable to the younger officers of the service. Accordingly, with this view, I have made several additions on such matters as I thought might be useful to them, and in particular, the greater part of the Section devoted to “Service in the Field,” has been translated froin a most interesting and instructive book written by General de Brack , an officer of the first distinction in the French Cavalry. The General’s publication is entitled Avant postes de Cavalerie légère , and will be found a valuable and amusing companion. This, and a military catechism, much considered in the Prussian Cavalry, form the basis of the trifling volume I venture with great diffidence to offer to my brother officers. » Présentation de l’éditeur (1843)
