« With the exception of a single German work of about fifty pages, the author knows of no distinctive guide book for carriage trimmers. The trade publications of the day contain valuable information, and serve to illustrate the progress made in this branch of the carriage business, but, instead of filling the want, they have made a condensed guide book a necessity. In the effort to supply this want, the author of the Carriage Trimmers ’ Illustrated Manual and Guide Book has aimed to avoid treating on special methods of construction or peculiar styles, knowing that the one is but an individual method, and fickle fashion dooms the other to obscurity after a short time; but with a view to preserving an historical record they are freely illus trated as representatives of the present styles.
In preparing this work the author has called to his aid some of the best talent in the trade, and he is also indebted to a number of carriage manufacturers for valuable assistance . With the aid of these he has pre pared a Manual to which the employer and employed can refer on all subjects of a specific character.
Materials, such as cloths, leather, laces, stuffing, etc., are treated in detail. The tables of kinds and quantities of material used in trimming carriages — some fifty in number — will be found reliable and useful in making up estimates of cost. The tables of repairs will also aid in estimating cost of retrimming or repairing old work.
The practical matter supplies valuable information on setting tops, putting up each specific part of the work, fitting up the trimming shop, etc., and a list of tools, together with illustrative description and prices. Under the caption of Bric-a-Brac is given a variety of illustrations and miscellaneous information of great value. The illustrated Technical Dictionary is the first work of the kind ever published. In it, as far as possible, cant terms of local significance have been ignored. Trade names already well established, or likely to be come so , owing to their connection with manufacturers ’ lists, are given. Various articles used are, as far as possible , illustrated, thus, by illustration and description, establishing the name and character of each specific article, and rendering the names uniform through out the trade. Carriage trimmers, as a class, are less given to making public their methods of working, or looking else where for information, than any other, while employees, as a rule, are less informed on this branch of their business. Should the publication of this work lead to more liberal research on the one hand, and a better knowledge of the business on the other, the author will feel that his labor has not been in vain.[…] » Présentation de l’éditeur (1881)
