« The aim and object of this little volume is to lay before my sporting friends and the public in general, to whom I have so often discoursed — and with so kindly hearers — concerning the Field Sports of America, a slight sketch of English Fox-hunting — the sport of sports, par excellence, and that sport carried to its acme as it is no where but with the Quorndon hounds and at Melton Mowbray. The use of real names and characters will be excused, because nothing other than to the credit of those specially named is herein contained — the identity of those unpleasantly depicted is veiled under mis- nomers. For the rest the merit of the sketch, if it have any, lies in its perfect truthfulness. Men, horses, dogs, and scenery are as they were at Melton when I was there last, three and twenty years ago. » Présentation de l’éditeur (1856)
