« Custom has assigned to a Preface the double service of bespeaking the Reader’s indulgence
towards all faults in the production to which it is attached, while it affords the
Author an opportunity to express the diffidence with which he regards the success
of his labours. In the former of these offices, this introduction adopts the usual
practice with accumulated solicitude: the latter it would be affectation to prefix
to a work which appears in its sixth edition.
The little, unpretending volume, for which the present appeal is made, has long been
a favourite manual with those for whose use it was written. The writer was one of
themselves, and the want of polish in his style was amply made amends for by the excellence
of his practical details. The whole has been carefully revised; and, with the exception
of a few passages, the quaintness of the original left untouched.
Of the new matter introduced, the principal portion will be found under the head of
the Chase, which subject it was thought convenient to re-write, and to which very
considerable addition has been made. In the Appendix, the chief alterations in the
Game Laws, enacted during the late reign, and having reference to the duties of the
Gamekeeper, are given; as also the Code of Rules for Coursing, drawn up at the recent
instance of the leading Coursing Clubs in England.
For the rest, he, to whom the office was entrusted of preparing old John Mayer for
his sixth presentation in public, is sanguine enough to hope the reception will not
be less cordial, that his costume is somewhat modernized, and accommodated to the
