« The articles embraced in the following pages frere written for, and originally appeared in, Haney’s Journal. They have been carefully revised, in great part rewritten, and a very large amount of fresh matter added. The interest which they awakened and the favor with which they metin their newspaper shape, lead us to hope that, in their present enlarged and revised form they will prove even more acceptable and useful. We feel convinced that no one interested in any way in horses will fail to find in our little book something which to him will be well worth the cost. The utmost pa’ns have been taken to insure accuracy and reliability in every particular, and to give, without any superfinity of mere words, just such information as would naturally be wanted. As to the system of improving the speed of horses herein detailed, we think its value and efficiency is evidenced by the achievements of Dexter, the most prominent among many examples. » Présentation de l’éditeur (1871)
