« The few hints that I am about to give are intended for the guidance and assistance of beginners, chiefly of men who, not being able to afford the time or expense of keeping up a racing stable on a large scale, are yet inclined to keep and ride their own horses over a country. To these this is addressed in the hope of adding a few recruits to the small and noble army of gentlemen riders and owners . Racing is now becoming so much a business, that only a few men in India can afford it, as it is an amusement that by no means pays for itself.
Steeplechasing, on the contrary, can be made to pay fairly. Even if it does not do more than pay expenses, the owner and rider of chasers will have had many pleasant rides, let us hope, for his money. I am not gifted with the pen of a ready-writer, so I trust that my readers will forgive my shortcomings, and that all of the right sort will join me in trying to induce a few more of the hard - riding youngsters who yearly come out to India to take a journey with us between the flags. » Présentation de l’éditeur (1879)
