« In presenting the first Sporting Calendar ever published in these colonies to an Australian public, the compiler of the following pages feels that he must rely strongly upon the favor and support which it invariably affords to every fresh literary attempt. The knowledge that the want of some such work as the " Australian Sportsman’s Calendar " has long been felt, and the hope that by supplying that want he might advance the interests of sporting in his native country, have been the only inducements to the compiler to undertake his present task, by which he ventures to hope that in some measure at least his object will have been attained. As is the case with all first attempts, there will doubtless be found in the " Australian Sportsman’s Calendar " room for improvement; to effect which, in future years, every attention shall be directed, while all suggestions having that end in view will be gratefully received. That some few inaccuracies should creep into a work of this kind is scarcely to be avoided, but every precaution has been adopted to render these as rare and unimportant as possible. Trusting then to the generosity of his critics, the compiler of the " Australian Sportsman’s Calendar, and Guide to the Turf ," leaves his production in their hands, with a firm reliance that under all the circumstances, they will be.
"To its merits ever kind, And to its faults a little blind." » Présentation de l’éditeur (1857)
