« The Drills contained in the following pages are written from many years experience in the Army, and, being in strict conformity with the latest regulations of the Service, are offered for the patronage of the Public, with a hope that they may not only assist those desirous of completing a military education, but that the work itself, being published in a cheap form, may be useful in enabling parents to instruct their families in those exercises so beneficial to the health and appearance of all young persons. The time has not yet arrived when athletic and healthy exercises shall be deemed of no moment, although the martial spirit once so general in England has, in a great measure, been quenched by a continuous peace. To walk and ride well are still essential qualifications to the gentleman, and form an important feature in his physical education, but, alas ! are too often neglected.
To those not intended for any active or military life, I trust this little book may still be serviceable, for, having attempted to lay down my instructions in a clear, concise manner, a person may, I conceive, by referring to its pages, instruct himself in acquiring a graceful carriage on foot, and a firm and easy seat on horseback. Were it necessary the opinions of most eminent medical authorities might be quoted in favour of athletic exercises; and what amongst that number, are more becoming in either sex than riding and walking in a proper manner ?
