« To the novice, learning the mastery of his horse is sufficient in itself, but the more experienced and ambitious rider is constantly looking for broader fields. In this book I have suggested several ways by means of which the accomplished rider can continue his own and his horse’s educations to the benefit of both. Lam particularly glad to take this opportunity of introducing the sport of hunting with bloodhounds to the horsemen and horsewomen of America. A few articles have already appeared on this subject in various sporting magazines but this is the first time I have been able to go into the sport in detail. I will be only too glad to help others wishing to form their own packs and to answer any other questions which may come up.
I would like to thank Major Louis Lamborn, Headmaster of the McDonogh School, McDonogh, Maryland, and commander of the McDonogh Troop, Junior Cavalry of America, for his kindness in making suggestions and checking the accuracy of the section on Military Organizations. I should also like to thank Major Harry Disston, author of Equestionaire, who had the goodness to give me and several other women a course in Officer’s Training and who helped with the forming of the New Canaan Mounted Troop. Until he was called on active service, Major Disston was the Squadron commander of this Troop. I feel that in the formation of these cavalry units we have a tremendously powerful means of developing and preparing the youth of America, both boys and girls, to meet the problems that are facing us all. Discipline, ability to "take it" when the going gets hard, quick thinking and a willingness to take responsibility are characteristics which this country needs in its citizens.
