« Schooling your horse belong with those books which have had extremely important effects on modern horsemanship. It is not "just another horse book." It embodies a life time of actual experience, of study, and of teaching. The author’s awareness of the changes which have taken place in the modern world of riding, in the altered conditions of horse keeping, and the circumstances under which one can school a horse today. have guided him in developing the practical method described in this book.
This book describes for the first time certain techniques in schooling, such as special exercises for hunters, the program ride with jumping and galloping in a large oval arena, and conditioning a horse for a Three Day Event type of competition.
The use of the Cavaletti, the use of the in-and-outs, and the development of the horse’s agility at fast gaits, are described more fully in this book than in any other. Certain items of basic theoretical knowledge on which modern riding and schooling are conceived are described here more scientifically, and at the same time popularly. than in any other book. This book argues against wrong but traditionally accepted conceptions of such things as the balance of the horse in motion, what is what is "collection" "engagement," and what is an extended trot. It is the wrong conception of these mechanics of the horse’s movements which is particularly responsible for retaining complicated, old fashioned methods of schooling.
These things are mentioned to show the more experienced horseman that this book is an important addition to the knowledge of modern schooling. The less experienced horseman will find this book a very easily understood, and a thoroughly practical guide to schooling a green horse, right from the very beginning to a calm, handy and "made" hunter, jumper or hack, because this book has been written especially for him.
Captain Littauer’s long experience in teaching both riding and schooling fits him for this task of instructing you how to school your horse in a practical, simplified and modern manner. As an admirer of General Harry D. Chamberlin, American’s greatest horseman, Captain Littauer has brought Chamberlin’s teachings "down to earth" and "up-to-date." If you are just an "every day" rider, you will find this book of the greatest interest and practical value. If you are an experienced horseman, you will find it to be a real advance in our knowledge of schooling. » Présentation de l’éditeur (1972)
