Dr. Haines has done more than any individual to track down information on the ancestry
of the spotted horse. He brought into focus the story of the Nez Perce horse and he
made possible a better understanding of the historical advance of the horse in American
Indian Culture from Mexico northward. Francis Haines first recognized the widespread
artistic evidence which has been the basis for the research in this volume. The Museum
staff and our many professional colleagues in this country and abroad have provided
