« Having received numerous enquiries from various parts of the United States and Europe,
in relation to the construction and general operation of Street Railways, I have been
induced to publish the following pages, which I trust will be found practically useful
to the Engineer, Contractor, Shareholder, and Director of Street Railways, as well
as to the Authorities of those Cities whose streets are about to be occupied by them.
I have been compelled to omit estimates of cost of construction, as the price of materials
varies in different localities; this, however, with Engineers. will be but a simple
work of calculation. I have endeavored to confine myself as much as possible to such
practical
information as, during my own experience in the construction of works of this nature,
I have considered most important, and in this effort I have been materially aided
by the kind advice of my friend, Strickland Kneass, Esq., whose authority in such
matters is undisputed. I also take great pleasure in acknowledging the kindness of
L. M. Stevens, Esq., Accountant of The Union Railway, Boston, for much general statistics
and information in the department of which he is so efficient an officer.
The following, I hope, will be the means of inciting investigation to a system which,
although now in its infancy, is rapidly providing a secure and profitable investment
for a large amount of capital. » Présentation de l’éditeur (1859)
